Well my camping trip up to a 6600 acre educational camp near Florrisant Colorado is done and it was quite an adventure. Me and ten other teachers, along with about thirty high school councilors and the camp staff, spent four days with 165 sixth graders hiking through the woods and learning about the natural world.
Mushrooms were not visible, as it have been pretty cold up there recently. The six inches of snow we received was also not ideal for mushroom development. The camp would be an excellent place for a future mushroom foray or mycoblitz, and I believe the camp management would be open to that idea.
However, while were siting around the fireplace in the cabin one night, I listened as one student explained what he had learned about pine beetles and blue stain fungus. He had been on a hike to a saw mill earlier that day.
If you are interested in reading my journal of the trip you may do so at my teaching blog Mister McIntosh Says.
