			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A tweet sent by <a href="http://fungalgenomes.org/" target="_blank">fungalgenomes</a> makes the point that <em>Phytopthora infestans</em>, causative of agent of <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/18/nyregion/18tomatoes.html?_r=1&amp;src=twt&amp;twt=nytimes" target="_blank">late blight</a>, is not a fungus. Okay I agree. It&#8217;s a fungal protist, an Oomycete (commonly known as a water mold) occupying a place that is not exactly fungal, not exactly animal, not completely a typical protist. <a href="http://www.plantpath.wisc.edu/pp300-UW/Pathogen/fungi.html" target="_blank">Oomyctes</a> were formerly considered fungi, but not anymore (by most people who are into that sort of thing).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A blog at Discover magazine, <a href="http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/80beats/2009/07/13/fungus-behind-the-irish-potato-famine-strikes-the-us/" target="_blank">Fungus Behind the Irish Potato Famine Strikes the U.S.</a>, sounds the alarm on a surge of potato late blight disease (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytophthora" target="_blank"><em>Phytophthora infestans</em></a>) affecting potatoes and tomatoes on the East coast of the USA.  I have noticed a number of other recent web articles popping up on this topic in the last week as well. This is the same disease that led to the <a href="http://www.historyplace.com/worldhistory/famine/index.html" target="_blank">Irish Potato Famine</a>. Pretty good internal links in the blog leading to other information as well.</p>
