Taking the Wikipedia Plunge

Well I took the plunge. I edited a Wikipedia page. And here’s the proof!

Fungal Portal

If you have ever edited a wiki before, its pretty easy. If, not it’ll take some getting used to.

After registering an account at Wikipedia, I followed the link previously sent in by Kathie Hodge and found an article that was listed as “lacking references. ” The article was Pileus. I rewrote/reorganized the intro paragraph (which was kind of rambling) and added an inline  note for a reference to the definition of pileus.

It would be a lot of fun and quite interesting if some of you would jump in and also work on the Pileus article. Just how far could we take it? Right now the article is classified as a stub, meaning it’s not much more than a place holder for an article waiting to be developed into a reliable reference article.

Some things that come to mind in the way of possible improvements include:

  • A discussion of the etymology of the word “pileus.”
  • An organized table that combines pictures, descriptions and representative genera for each of the pileus types
  • More photographs

Give it a whirl!
