What Ever Happened To… Hyphoid Logic?

One of the things I do is snoop around for other mycology blogs. My hope is to find people to connect with, maybe even trade some guest blogs, and in general let people know about other worthwhile web destinations. Unfortunately the mycoblogological landscape is a bit bleak at the moment.

Sure there are some excellent blogs. By excellent I mean ones that are still active, look nice and are worth visiting more than once year (or more than just once period). The Cornel Mushroom Blog, and The Hyphal Tip are cool.

The blogosphere is littered with abandoned blogs—millions of them. That’s too bad for a couple of reasons. Most of these would-be-bloggers never had anything noteworthy to say in the first place so no great loss there. Worse is the fact that a lot of them came up with really excellent blog names and web addresses that are now lost to the world and can never be used by anyone with a legitimate use! That’s too bad.

Take for example Hyphoid Logic, touted as the site for the “Mentations of a Mad Mycologist.” What a good idea! Very cool name! I can’t wait to see what this person has to say! We haven’t heard from the proprietor since December of 2008.

No real mycological content anyway. An attempt to contact the writer has gone unanswered. Oh well.

I think you’ve made a great step toward improving the status of mycology reading on the web. I mean, you just invented the term “mycoblogological.” You laid the ground work! A thriving community has to be just around the corner. ;-)

Well Emily, sometimes it’s a rant. Hyphoid Logic is such an excellent name for a blog, it’s just a shame it isn’t put to better use. I plan to mention a few other dead blogs along these lines — as well as any good ones of course. Perhaps someday the good ones will outnumber the dead ones. I’m not sure that is the situation at the moment.

There is a certain absurdity about blogging on someone else’s blog about blogs mentioned on one’s own blog, but let me just say…. I’ve got a collection of fungus blog links on the Cornell Mushroom Blog. Sure, some are in languages that I can’t read, but the pictures are always good.
