An article appeared earlier this month at the website of The Missourian, highlighting the efforts of local mushroom growers to make a dent in the market and their bank accounts. Mushroom Farmers Work to Expand in Missouri, by Lisa Appleton, appeared on July 12, 2009.
Mostly, it’s about the efforts of some small time growers, and how to get started in mushroom growing. Apparently, there are no commercial Agaricus operations in the state, so specialty growers are having a go with shiitake, oyster, lions mane, and even morels (not so much).
According to the article “…the MUÂ Center for Agroforestry has been encouraging farmers around Missouri to grow specialty mushrooms as a way to conserve and use logs. This type of ‘forest farming’ can provide income and improve the management of wooded areas.”
The sidebar is pretty interesting, with a variety of additional information.
